Attempted V-log and Shadow Canyon Hike
I have never done a vlog before, and I have never videoed myself either. It’s even harder than taking a self portrait. This is my first attempt at a v-log, so forgive the beginner quality. I quit messing with it less than halfway up the hike, irritated I didn’t know how to do it. I am going to post what I did, anyway, and then just post the pics from the rest of the way.
I love hiking, and have started easing (gently now, gently) into trail running. I am starting with Mesa Trail, because most of the way it isn’t very technical. (Technical trails are single track, rocky, steep, and offer more challenges than trails with gravel and are smoother. I was on Runner’s World this morning in the trail running forums and found this:
Why does the popularity of trail running in the United States surge every time there’s a national crisis or period of epidemic uncertainty?
Simple answer: Running like a wild man or woman through the woods nurtures the soul.
I do look and feel like a wild man when I trail run, even when I hike.
This is a technical trail:
This is not:
I was out of breath and sweaty every time we stopped, I always huff and puff on these trails. Here is my video. Next time I will make one where I am not sweaty, squinting, in sweats and a ponytail and out of breath. I mean come on, how am I going to flirt with people looking like this?
I think I quit using the video around mile four and just started taking pictures. Here is another flower for @vexations. No idea what any of them are, but they are pretty.
This is another rock slide, I see them all over. I am not sure why this happens, why the rocks look literally like a slide from the top, but likely my friend @Therewillbedragons will know. He knows Rocky Mountain National Park well, so I am sure he can offer insight.
Caesar (Dog Whisperer) once did a show on a poorly behaved German Shepherd. His suggestion was to give him a job and have him wear the backpack when they were out walking so the dog felt like he had a job to do. It worked on TV, and by God it works for me. He is much less excitable when he wears his pack, and I don’t have to carry all the water!
Another proud mommy shot:
And another:
The above trail is still a technical trail because it’s steep on both sides and very narrow, but the boulder paths didn’t come until later in the hike. Believe it or not, this is a trail. I am slow and clumsy over the rocks, but it is Salem’s favorite part. We stopped just up ahead so he could climb and get some water, and I could drink water but I didn’t climb any rocks I didn’t have to.
Here he is on his rock, I take so many pictures of him he knows to stop and hold still when I tell him to. That, and he is a ham for the camera.
I usually say “stop” and then “sit”, sometimes when I say stop he just assumes he needs to sit.
I found another pretty tree for Vexations:
I love Xanga people. @vexations reminds me to stop and smell the flowers, @buddy71 reminds me to slow down and look close, @We_Deny_Everything reminds me to use my brain and do the work! (hehe) and @xplorrn reminds me to enjoy the music. Everybody here has been good for me. Anyway, we were climbing the canyon and I was huffing and puffing. It’s a steep climb in only 1.4 miles. We stopped for another water break when I saw this neat stump that appeared to have steps in it, just like the steps (rock steps) we had been climbing. I took a picture of it for Buddy71.
We made it to the top of the canyon, to the saddleback. We didn’t climb the peaks because his paw was bleeding, and I didn’t know if he was hurt or just scuffed it climbing up the canyon. We headed back to the car, here are some of the views:
The closer we got to the car, the faster Salem wanted to go. He was hungry and tired!
At the end of the day, we only hiked 10.8 miles, but it was still a good day. Thanks for reading my oh so exciting trail report!

cool trip! nice pics
@buddy71 - Thanks! I thought of you when I saw the stump!
Nice job on the vlog! Looks like such a fun hike. The doggy backpack idea is brilliant.
@Iobot - Thanks! That backpack is a lifesaver!
I love these vlog thingys. I don’t know how to do them, but I really enjoy watching them. 10.8 miles? That terrain? No way. It would be Marguerita Time after a half mile for me..
You have a really nice speaking voice, Christina.
@Kellsbella - I’m not sure how to do them either, and it’s going to be tricky to learn how to hold the phone in the best way to talk into them, but I will get there. I promise next time I will wear makeup, please don’t quit flirting with me
It was 10.8 miles but it was also nearly 6 hours. We stopped several times, I just wish I had thought of bringing margaritas rather than water. Next time.
You need to figure it out. It’s your turn next.
I knew you would be hot!!!! And Salem looks like an amazingly cool dog!!! Great Vlog, Great pics, Great post.
beautiful pics… and great vlog, you’re a natural!
so you and Salem were the only ones there? no other people around on any of the trails?
@amateurprose - Thanks doll! You definitely bring out the cougar in me..
Salem is an awesome dog and the best hiking partner ever! Who else would carry my crap?
@Peridot21 - Haha, thanks! I will still keep practicing.
We ran into a few people on Mesa before we went up the canyon. The canyon is a steep incline and steers people who have any common sense away. It was also Friday morning, the trails are busier on the weekends.
hey my best memories were made with women who were “sweaty, squinting, in sweats and a ponytail and out of breath”
sometimes minus the sweats.
i’d be out of breath on that trail too, by the way. damn. well done.
That deserves a mini for sure. It is great.
I love the pictures
I’ve never attempted a hike like that, but one day I’d love to try.
12 miles — good for you!
great job – and you looked and sounded great too! =) enjoyed your commentary and background. was smart to just break it up into little splices like that.
oh, & i love your dog, Salem too.
such a nice area. makes me want to visit there now too. lol.
Didn’t you learn your lesson with alcohol. If you do that, we might not find you again. Save the booze for after the hike. Something to look forward to. Next time hike in a bikini and see if you get any looks. Bikini and hiking boots… I’d pay some decent coin for those photos!
@complicatedlight - That is how I spend most of my days, minus the out of breath! I’m pleased to hear you don’t mind women when they aren’t all fussed up, and especially without sweats!
It was a good hike, we went slow and stopped at every stream and tons of boulder fields, so it didn’t hurt as bad as if I had blazed all the way up! You should come with me next time!
@we_deny_everything - Thanks for the mini, you must know how I love ninjas! I didn’t add any history to my report, but I tried to make up for it with pretty pictures.
I can’t believe you didn’t make fun of the dog? I threw in making him sit just to impress you with his good behavior!
@xdeelynnx - I will take you on one anytime! All you need is to come visit..
@YouToMe - Thanks! I had a hard time doing the video thing, but I will get better as I keep practicing. Salem is great, he has been my best companion and empty nest cure.
You should add Boulder to your list of “to see places”. I would be happy to take you out as far as you like!
@Zoz36 - Hahaha, I think if I had taken any booze up with me I would never have made it back down! Bikini and boots, eh? I’m pretty sure I would get sunburned.
@complicatedlight - PS – LOVE the new pic! I missed my fuzzy bear!
@BoulderChristina - What state? I’ll try to drag Scott with me
@xdeelynnx - Bring him! We live in Boulder, CO. If you even made it to Denver I could drag you up here!
@BoulderChristina - Sounds like a plan
^_^
@BoulderChristina - ut oh…thinking of me when you see wood?
lol
@BoulderChristina - thanks C. that invitation sounds grand! =) awww, empty nester, you. i forgot your girls were away. =/ i can surely relate. big HUGS to you
i’m sure you will improve too. but they really were very nicely done for a first time. it was not too much info or too much footage, like some vlogs tend to be.
@BoulderChristina - Isn’t that why there’s suntan lotion…
@SarahC0828 - You live in Houston? I may swing through there in Sept, where do you walk? I need some pointers about where to go there, hehe. You can come visit anytime and I will take you on any trail you like!
Lovely. I only I wish I had 10+ miles of trails like to cover in Houston! I walk 3 miles almost daily (sometimes 6) but it’s at a very civilized park near the city limits of Houston (boring). NOTHING like what you’ve posted. I’m super jealous! Thanks for sharing.
That looks more dangerous than saintV’ s geocaching.
@RulerofMasons - I guess I didn’t see that one.
I’d love to be in a place where there are hikes like this. are there any camping areas along the routes? or nearby? in Oklahoma, there’s not much in the way of hiking.
beautiful country.
you rocked it bc… way hot there woman!!! much prefer a workout than a lay about…. can’t wait to show you what causes those rock slides!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoHuxpa4h48
You are so cute.
the boulder boner hahaw, love it. very amusin. hey, were you hiking alone except for your dog? I guess I’d have to do something like this if I wanted to get losing weight faster. I guess we’ll having to find something like that round here. 2 of the dogs would like it.
ps. you sound so official, have you thought abuot being a travel tour guide
@plantinthewindow - I’m pretty lucky. I spent 10 years in prairie land, so I know what you mean. There are lots of places to hike around, but not in open spaces like these.
You should come check it out sometime!
@xplorrn - Hahaha! I felt the earth move, too! Oh wait, were you talking about the rock slide?
Thanks for the compliments – I hope to catch you tomorrow at the gym!
@TheTheologiansCafe -
@NewDog2 - Haha, the Boulder Boner is right next to South Boulder Peak, which is where I was aimed!
I was just with the dog, yes. I like to hike without people usually, so I can stop and take pics when I want and I don’t have to cover for anyone while they pee off the trail! It is a great calorie burner, though. At my weight (which I assume is less than you) I burned 3200 calories today hiking. Are you and DJ racing? I saw she was losing weight, too.
@NewDog2 - So official? I could kiss you. No, I haven’t considered it this far but I might!
@BoulderChristina - you are so right. and I just might do that.
That was a great video.
These are really gorgeous photos, and I love the dog!
@LKJSlain - Thank you!
@musterion99 - Thanks! It was my first time, I will get better!
i adore salem. and you’re great. i love vlogs. you must do more
and how does vexations get a flower and i don’t?
props to hiking 12 miles. i prefer single-tracks too. last time we hiked was in yosemite. was it Happy Isles? i cannot remember anyway…
great fotos too
@bonmots - Ahh, thank you! Next time, the flowers are all yours. He didn’t even come see the flowers I shot for him!
You are too sweet with your compliments. Salem is my baby, I am pretty fond of him. I will do a couple more little vlogs, I hope I get more practice!I ended up not even doing 11 miles. I didn’t climb the peak and took an alternate route back, so it shortened it a little for me. That’s ok, I am still dog ass tired!
Where do you hike?
@bonmots - I meant, where do you live? Do you have hiking trails close?
This was wonderful and you are much to apologetic for your vlog and your appearance. I’ve been on a number of hikes in the Flagstaff and Sedona area of AZ and your hike reminds me of those, expect you run (I walk) and you know so much more about hiking than I do. I am not sure at all about vegetation in your area. The flowering tree looks like a serviceberry or Sarvis Tree which is pretty common in the Cumberland Mts. and Appalachian Mts. This is one cool post! Thanks for sharing it as it is so special. I like how you did it for a number of Xanga bloggers and i feel significant to have been included.
Looking at the trail and with a dog by your side, I am amazed you were able to hike that far. My own dog would never let me hike that far. He’ll be too busy running around, chasing butterflies and other flying things.
Great video and photos. I enjoyed this.
@vexations - You’re such a sweetheart! I have heard Sedona and Flagstaff is a great hiking area! I don’t know about knowing more about hiking, but I spend a lot of time doing it. I only ran the Mesa Trail part, no way could I run up the canyon! But if you want to think I am that tough, I will let you!
@reckless_eagle - Thank you! He spent the first few miles chasing butterflies, but after that he wised up and saved his energy!
Great VBlog and the scenery there is absolutely beautiful. Salem is a stunning animal and your photos make me want to grab my camera and head your way. You live in such a beautiful area. Thanks for sharing and and for sharing and making the Vblog.
“we only hiked 10.8 miles” – If I had hiked that far I wouldn’t be able to walk for a week. Actually, methinks we would have to call rescue and have some hunky dude carry me back down the mountain. Don’t you just love how my mind works? **giggles…
Such wonderous pictures of Mother Nature and all her glory and what can I say about Salem? He is such an absolutely gorgeous dog! Love the fact that he poses, but even more impressed with his ability to carry a pack. Was his foot ok? I’m hoping it was just a scrape from a rock. He most certainly is a charmer.
Loved the vlog. You did very well. Has anyone told you, you have the cutest nose. *smile… I’ve noticed it before, just haven’t mentioned it.
Thanks so much for the truly stunning share. Very much enjoyed. It’s nice to see other parts of the country and Colorado is drop dead marvelous in many ways.
@Grannys_Place - Thank you, glad you liked it! If Salem keeps getting all these compliments it is bound to go to his head!
@MzSilver - Now I know we are just alike, because I sat on the saddleback and daydreamed about just that – hot search and rescue hunks coming to carry me down!
His foot was fine, he never limped and when we got home I couldn’t find anything wrong with it. He must have cut it on a rock and healed it with the dirt on the way down. Being outside enjoying the beauty of the outdoors (not just in CO) is when I am the most at peace. Time stops, stress doesn’t follow me up a trail, and nothing matters when I am out doing things I love. It is one of my favorite drugs of choice. Now I need to come check out your neck of the woods!
Thanks for the compliments, I don’t think I have ever heard that one before!
@BoulderChristina - Great minds thinking alike. I do love your style. A woman after my own heart. Now that is impressive. Perhaps we need to make ‘search and rescue’ happen.
My neck of the woods have a lot to offer as well and y’all are more than welcome to visit. Bring your sleeping bags. The apt is tiny, but there’s always room in the front room or we could all share the queen size bed (did I say that?).
Rock falls (talus slopes) are caused by chemical and mechanical weathering of bedrock, usually on very steep slopes and cliffs. It is enhanced by frequent freezing and thawing of moisture that gets into the cracks in rocks and causes them to peel off and tumble down. The blue flower in your blog is in the genus Mertensia, commonly called chiming bells. The white ground flowers are sand lilies. See, i know about more then just sex. hehe.
@ThereWillBeDragons - MY HERO!! I tell you what, that kind of knowledge will ALWAYS get you laid! Well, by me at least! So, it’s just a rock fall? It happens all at once?
@MzSilver - You made Corey blush when I let him read that! Hehe, I am certain that we will meet in person someday, either here or there. I look forward to it!
@BoulderChristina - Mmmmm…that would be a treat. hehehe. No, rockfalls occur over many thousands of years.
@ThereWillBeDragons - Why does it look like a slide? Why are there grown trees that grow out of them and nothing else? Maybe I should buy a book, eh?
Great looking hiking trail and awesome vlog! Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful. I visited Boulder many years ago and loved it. Funny, I have pictures of hiking in the snow! It was a strange April and Boulder got 26 inches of snow during the week. I have pictures of me with carpis on and my little pink shoes. It was hilarious.
I am amazed at how Salem is so well behaved, too. My dumb dog would be lost and end up as bear food. Do you hike alone?
Thanks for sharing your video..I think you did a great job!
Very nice trails, nice dog, and I enjoyed your VLOG!
@DivaJyoti – thanks! My first try with the iPhone
@SoullFire - Thank you!
@LifeNeedsProtection - Thank you! I brag about him, but he is naughty, too. Your April experience isn’t that unusual, especially if it was 70 the next day! You should post those pics sometime, I bet they are hilarious.
I rarely hike alone, I almost always take Salem with me. He wears a bell around his hiking pack so he makes a lot of noise to discourage the critters from eating us, and no person would be foolish enough to mess with us with him around. (Few people know he’s really a big baby. Shhh!)
It looks like you had a wonderful day! You live in such beautiful country! I used to hike a lot when I lived in California. Now it’s more just nature walks through the forest…not so many mountains in my neck of the woods.
I’m glad you did this video blog of your hike, and I hope you do more of these. I really enjoyed it!
@plantinthewindow - Thank you! I will, I was even practicing with the camera today! Glad you enjoyed it, the scenery here never ceases to awe me!
@accidentalangel - Thank you! Where do you live now? Walking through the woods is nice too. I found my perfect running trail in Western PA.
@BoulderChristina - I live in Minnesota now, in a small town north west of Minneapolis. It’s nice, we live close to the Crow River and we’ve got lots of trails that run through the woods and by the river. I’m kind of a “nature girl”, so I enjoy living here much more than where we lived in Southern California. More to do!
totally awesome! i love the vlog to! you did great! its very beautiful there! 12 miles! you must be in shape! and if you lived in ohio i could tell you every flower, shrub and tree you ever wanted to know! great blog!
….lets go fishing!
I love Cesar Milan, he’s a dang genius. I can’t wait until Hank is old enough to wear packs. He’s not badly behaved, but he does need his energy drained (to use a Cesar phrase) consistently, otherwise he gets bored and restless- he’s already almost 30 pounds, so we can’t have that!
@WaitingToShrug - The first couple of years is all about spending that energy! haha, I hope you post more pics of him soon.
@the_fur_pimp - Thanks! I am ready to go fishing, waiting with my pole and tackle box. I only did less than 11 miles, but I couldn’t have done that a few years ago. It is pretty here, and I still think you belong in the mountains!
@BoulderChristina - I need to, don’t I? Maybe I will do that today.
@BoulderChristina - what do you wanna fish for today?
@the_fur_pimp - I’m feeling pretty lazy, how about we just sit, drop in our lines to the bottom (catfish maybe?) and have a beer while we wait?
@BoulderChristina - alright then i will thaw some liver and pick up a sixer of rolling rock!
Sexy mama, you have lots of energy. That distance you covered? probably i can do that in my wild dreams…. keep up the energy!!
What a great dog
@ElevenStones - Thank you!
@MissNzisa - Thank you so much!
You are beautiful, as well as gorgeous and ambitious!!!
Just caught the part about the “boulder boner” and it made me laugh, took me back to a visit to a cave system in Missouri, and my daughter saying, “Dad, that looks like a man’s weinie!!! Yes, it certainly did. lol
