The Paradox of Choice
When I go to Starbucks for coffee, I buy a tall dark roast coffee, black. My husband orders a Venti Chai skim milk please. My daughter orders a Venti Caramel Machiatto extra whipped cream and my sister orders a “”Zebra” half white chocolate mocha and half mocha. We do like our choices, we like to have them, we like to make them. We hate waiting in line while other people make theirs, and we hate even more looking at someone else’s drink wondering if theirs is better or if we made the wrong choice.
The problem with choices is that there are so many of them. Yesterday I posted about fear and anxiety and a lovely young lady, @specialxplaces responded with this insightful comment.
“I think kids are raised in a generation where there are so many options as to what to do with your future, and none of it seems to ever be good enough. They’re afraid that their choices will make others unhappy, or their choices will make themselves unhappy. Choosing the wrong career or something, that’s a big step that costs a lot of money in education. There’s something wrong with everything that’s good, ya know? Kids today are all too aware of that I think. “
She is right. I remember reading a book a few years ago called The Paradox of Choice, which discussed exactly this subject and it made a big impact on me, I agree with nearly everything it said.
Not only do we make consumer choices daily (jeans – low cut, straight leg or boot leg, regular fit, slim fit,) but there is a lot of research that needs to go into these choices. Ok, maybe not so much as the jeans, but think of buying a TV, computer, car. Consumer reviews, features, warranties, projecting the uses of these objects and making a package of option fit for our own personal needs. Carfax reports, country of origin, consumer reports, price and product reviews – we wouldn’t sacrifice a single one of them. We hang onto our options and choices despite the tedious researching and education that goes into each decision.
But the fun doesn’t end there. In America, we free people can choose everything. Where to go to school, to college, what field we want to enter, what religion we choose, sex, romance, parenting…. None of these decisions can be taken lightly, they all impact our life not just now but long term.
Now let’s talk about opportunity cost and buyer’s remorse. I chose to not go into health care though that was what I believed I wanted to do. As my career path turned, I always kept an eye on my sister’s career path (she chose to go into healthcare.) Though I don’t regret my decision, there has been many times that I thought of the financial difference, the security she has, the cost of the opportunity I didn’t take. Now, I am exaggerating here a bit. I am not really the type to look at that, I am way too self centered, but I think you get my point. These decisions, choices, and consequences are serious and stressful.
One of my favorite paragraphs of the book states “…there is a cost to having an overload of choice. As a culture, we are enamored with freedom, self determination, and variety and are reluctant to give up any of our options. But clinging tenaciously to all the choices available to us contributes to bad decisions, anxiety, stress and dissatisfaction.”
The thought that I keep thinking about is positive liberty and negative liberty – positive liberty is the freedom to.. negative liberty is the freedom from….
My stress avoiding super powers have a strange side effect which makes me a poor shopper – I get in, get out and don’t come back. I tend to avoid looking at my decisions too long, I hate remorse. And I refuse to look at what other people have, opportunity cost is something I don’t have to feel if I don’t look at too closely. So I drink my coffee black, I have my sister choose my clothes when we shop, and I usually eat whatever the daily special is at the cafe. I am dull, simple, and pretty damn happy.

I think how we write were twinkies in another life. Great Post.
I HAVE to pick up this book. Who is the author?
“None of these decisions can be taken lightly, they all impact our life not just now but long term.”
That’s the point – these milestones as we call them are the biggest decisions we have to make in our lives, they define who we are and how we’ll live. We all want to be good people and live solid lives. I think the biggest mistake people make is no making ANY decisions out of fear, they were overwhelmed with choices and stood still for a lifetime. I’ve seen it happen.. it’s not pretty. Those people need to be encouraged that it’s okay to make mistakes, you can’t always have the best of the best, but as long as you do what makes you happy, you’ll be alright.
Great post.
The “Zebra” sounds delicious. Hmmm. That’s something I never thought I would say.
Oh, and great post. Well done, again.
@specialxplaces - Thanks! It was a great one, the author’s name is Barry Schwartz. Let me know what you think after you read it. And you are right, not making a decision is making a decision.
@amateurprose - Thanks! And yes, she is very selective with everything, even her Starbucks!
@Kris0logy - Ha, I don’t get it. but thanks!
Futurist Alvin Toffler wrote about the super abundance of choice as a pox on mankind in his blockbuster book, Future Shock back in the 70s.
Leftists like Toffler want us all driving solar powered Model T’s in our Mao uniforms or else the world will end.
The need for variety is a basic need in human beings. And a free, robust market fills not only that basic human need but the human need to prosper.
The catch to prosperity is that it requires a laser focus on virtue and constant acquisition of self knowledge. Otherwise decadence and debauchery set in.
Give me a Starbucks venti mocha latte or give me death!
@PrisonerxOfxLove - I agree, we don’t want to let go of our choices! But they suck at the same time. Venti Mocha latte, that made me laugh! Thanks!
Truth! Before I look at big choices I look at things like “when did the company merge with the other country, and how are the designs in each similar?” ”Are there ethical issues with one company that provide a superior product, vs an inferior product that do not have business ethics that I cannot ignore?” ”Do these jeans make my ass look as hot as it really is, or do they really hinder how hot my ass looks by not being the perfect fit?”
So many things to consider.
I think these days the biggest choice on my mind is ‘do I want to get up this morning or spend the day in bed.” Oh, and whether to get double stuffed or regular Oreos… That ones HUGE!!!
I’m giggling because my sister goes to the Starbucks every morning and orders one of those elaborate numbers, and they say, “Coming right up!” Then I order coffee; black; and it causes mass confusion in the Starbucks….
My comment went lost
Well it was something about having too many choices and lack of discipline and structure is such a great tragedy for me
it is but now that I think about it, seems quite lame lol
My parents did the liberal path while raising kids, it didn’t worked out at least for us…we are very strict parents now :
You have to have the “Antigua Guatemala” coffee on starbucks, it’s quite amazing
Agree completely, but I’m fine with making the quick decision and not looking back. When I bought my car, I looked at exactly 4 cars, made a decision, signed the papers and walked out. DId I get the best car? I dunno. Prolly not. But it’s fine. And I didn’t spend all day worrying about it.
Good entry.
It’s always good to have choices. as an aside, the person who wrote that comic on the bottom has zero familiarity with alcoholism/hangovers/liver disease and things like that, that’s not a jab at you, just a jab at the artist.
choices make me crazy. i order the same thing when i go out to the same restaurant. the starbucks menu about sends me into therapy. planning the dinner menu? just tell me what you’ll eat without complaining and i will make it. and i will get buyer’s remorse for getting a pack of twizzlers. my van? i liked the color and that it had fold up seats. i hate shopping. hmm.. i vented.
i liked this post. i understood every word.
to dwell or not to dwell that is the question…
ahhh, yeah – i don’t have an answer. but i do think make the choice and move on, tomorrow’s a new day with other opportunities to make choices… like right now i hear my son playing basketball, and i think i’ll go play with him…. bye bc… interesting post – and i’ll take a hot chocolate, thanks and please – i never grew to like the taste of coffee…
I don’t like to shop, either. I go in take a quick lap around the department and then buy something or leave. Hubby will shop, shop, shop….I quit going with him when he looks at shoes! However, I will hang out in the cereal aisle of the grocery store as I decide among the hundreds of types!!
Having choices is great, you just have to know when to agonize over one and when not to.
Nice post.
@SasGal - Your ass look fine, miss
@MzSilver - Double stuff, that doesn’t need to worry you!
@Kellsbella - Haha, if we went in together the world would implode!
ha…funny stuff. I personally thrive on choice. I take a long time to make them and I enjoy the whole deliberative process. I rarely regret them. But I understand how choice can seem overwhelming.
@xXxlovelylollipop - Nothing you say is lame! And I will have to check that out, thanks!
@BoulderChristina - Hey girl,
@blonde_apocalypse - I am with you, I did the whole car thing in a day, but I knew everything in advance.
@Big_Bang_Theory - Haha, it may be wrong but it made me smile!
@promisesunshine - We have the same vent I believe!
@xplorrn - It’s ok if you don’t like coffee, I still think you’re hot.
@whyzat - I agree, when to agonize over them is the key! Thanks!
@ordinarybutloud - You are one of the few and proud! Haha, thanks!
@BoulderChristina - sometimes i ask questions on facebook so people will tell me what to decide.
i’m a pathetic excuse for a grown-up.
@promisesunshine - That’s frickin brilliant. Pathetic? No. Genius? Perhaps.
@BoulderChristina - Well that’s a plus, and proves you’re a complete innocent when it comes to the agonies of chronic alcoholism. I bet you’ve never even had a wreched hangover. Cheers to that!
@BoulderChristina - as long as i have smart facebook friends (which i mostly do. the dumb ones defriend me. oooh. snarky.)
To clarify, I think it’s actually right about 90-98 percent of the time, I didn’t mean to call it ‘wrong.’ sorry if that was rude. One must be cautious round here lest one get misunderstood.
@Big_Bang_Theory - No, no, it would be very hard to offend me and you didn’t come close! I meant wrong as in incorrect.. though I guess it could work the other way, too. And you are right, I am not a big drinker so I have obviously been sheltered from most of that, however, nothing hurts worse than the day after a couple glasses of bubbly! So now I drink wine on NYE and pretend it’s fizzy
.
@promisesunshine - Oh no you didn’t *finger snap*
That’s exactly the trouble I have. There are too many choices, and there’s not even a set list of choices. A path diverging in a wood I could handle, but it’s like being in the middle of the Sahara desert–nothing looks inviting and I haven’t the slightest idea in which direction I should start. I’ve chased mirages a couple of times and just ended up making things harder for my family, who does their best for me. I’m just jogging in place, fighting to make the most of a rapidly-vanishing oasis, hoping that something will come along. I know it’s an awful way to go about things, but I have no confidence at all in my ability to do anything else.
@BoulderChristina - The bubblies are worst for the hangover, I agree. I don’t know why, but it’s true, many would agree.
@lanney - It gets stressful, overwhelming, and paralyzing, doesn’t it? I hear ya, and know you will find your way.
@lanney - i’ll make your decisions for you. i’m good with other people’s.
thats cool.great post.
@promisesunshine - Other people’s are so much easier. I’m always quite sure they can do it.
you are so right. i always wonder how people back then, way back then, chose their careers. they didn’t seem like they were having breakdowns making their decisions. now, kids are like, it’s not fulfilling i have to go change it. not that there’s something wrong with that, but it makes things harder. you know?
“Choosing the wrong career is a big step that costs .. ” She’s right. We never had these worries growing up. Education was easy to get and easy to pay for. We had the latitude to make mistakes. I cheer for these young heroes. I rue their loss of adolescence.
You are a good writer, your stories are always so interesting!
lovely cats, PDF splitter, PDF split
This is why it’s better to live in a dictatorship. Life is easier without choices. I miss Stalin.
While I certainly believe people should put a lot of thought into important decisions, it is indecisivness that can be a killer. If you take a long time to decide on something or go back and forth because you can’t make a decision, you can let a great thing pass you by. And the more you think about a decision, the more stress you have and the harder it becomes. There is something to be said about keeping things simple.
Well…now all I can think about is how much I want Starbucks!
If we had less options, we can make a choice=)
Choices. Do we take the high road ? The low road ? The straight and narrow ? The road less traveled or the never ending road ? Choices make or break a future. Thing about choices is, you are never really wrong. Some choices get you there quicker, while others take you longer, but in the end, the final outcome to where you want to get to, is always there. No matter what choice you take.
My choice at Starbucks is Caramel Machiatto. I should look up other choices as you say and check them out too.
Having options is good. One got to stay true to their self and stay focused, that’s all.
@nov_way - I may go nuts with all the options, but I wouldn’t let go of a single one.
@angys_coco - The Zebra Mocha is tasty if you are a choc lover!
@catstemplar2 - It doesn’t surprise me that you are a destiny thinker, I tend to think I am as well. That’s why I enjoy your posts so much.
@sweethearthoney85 -Thank you!
@promisesunshine - @lanney - You two should totally do a switch a roo!
@f5ye_angel5 - I have often wondered how much simpler life would be to wake up knowing I was a blacksmith, and my choices were simply to be a good blacksmith or a poor one. I doubt I would enjoy not having choices, but it’s a nice thought sometimes.
@we_deny_everything - As do I. I feel for them, having two daughters in their early 20′s I see how tough some things are for them even more so than me, and I am only 15 years older.
@Funnychina - Thank you!
@TheMushyPear - You and me both, sweetheart.
If you are looking for a dictator, I was thinking of throwing my hat in the ring for it…
@heckels - The indecisiveness is a killer, isn’t it?
@KelliAnnC - I hope you picked some up this morning!
@amyha819 - Hehe, very true!
@BoulderChristina - that is totally what i was thinking!! it would work out very well. i’m sure of it. i had obl make my decisions last night. it was awesome.
I agree. so many choices and they can’t decide which one is for them.
check this out. it’s somewhat along the same lines: http://wakeuplaughing.xanga.com/764013991/youre-not-special/
hehehe hopes u liked the trololo just finished it
I’ve lived under “freedom from.” It didn’t feel like living at all. I like “freedom to” much better. I’ll take the stress that goes with it if it means there will be no hard fast limits on what I can be.
@plantinthewindow - They are on friend’s lock!
@MrTrololo - You’re such a stud! Thank you!
@Ampbreia - I agree!
dang! you even plug Starbucks…you KNOW there is a big BOYCOTT STARBUCKS movement going on…but you plug it….you HAVE JUST GOT to work for some government/leftist agency…and get bonus points for your blog work? Okay, I don’t know this book, but THE CHINA MODEL of government that this administration is pursuing will be happy when we accept what we are told. No Choice: No Beef.
Hey, it’s not my fault things are screwed up, I didn’t make the decisions. That’s un-American. The Land of The Brave MAKES the future, makes creative decisions, and changes them if they go wrong. look at this…http://www.blacklightpower.com and this http://www.focufusion.org this is American heroes making the future for humanity by brave, informed choices.
@mortimerZilch – I have no idea why, but I adore you Mortimer
I hope when the zombie apocalypse comes you will be in my side.
@BoulderChristina - Like minds stick together. Thank you for your visionary comment. You see me beyond the veil of obscurity
@BoulderChristina - i think for some people. or maybe just me, i like to have choices because everybody have one. if everyone else around me has no choice but to just suck it up and do what they were told, then i don’t think i’ll complain about it. unless of course it’s abusing
